About Girls On It

Girls On It is a home and kitchen decor blog for people who want their homes to look good and actually work for the way they live. Here you’ll find decorating ideas for every style, from cozy farmhouse kitchens to calm Japandi bedrooms, plus honest advice on furniture, color, lighting, and the small styling choices that pull a room together.

The name says it plainly. You have a room that isn’t working, a budget that isn’t endless, and a Pinterest board full of maybes. We’re on it.

Meet Kate, Founder and Editor

Hi, I’m Kate. (Not Kathy, not Katie. Just Kate.)

Kate
Kate

From 2011 to 2017, I wrote Heir and Space, a home decor blog built around furniture makeovers, vintage finds, and the joy of giving old pieces a second life. And yes, it’s pronounced Air and Space. I’ve been correcting people for years and I’m not tired of it yet.

Before I started blogging full time, my working life was all about old things. I worked at a museum, then spent three and a half years with a wonderful antiques dealer, learning how to read the age of a dresser from its joinery and why a hundred-year-old chair can outlast anything sold flat-packed today. That love of history still shapes how I decorate. I believe the best rooms mix a few pieces with a story alongside the new.

I’ve been refinishing furniture for well over a decade, and I still fall a little bit in love with every piece that comes through my workshop. Sanding, stripping, painting, reupholstering: it never gets old. Most days you’ll find me covered in sawdust, wearing eyeliner and lipstick anyway.

Heir and Space went quiet in 2017. Girls On It is where I’m picking things back up, with a bigger scope. This time it’s not only furniture, but the whole home: kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, entryways, outdoor spaces, and everything in between.

What You’ll Find on Girls On It

  • Decor styles explained: What makes a room farmhouse, mid-century modern, boho, Scandinavian, or organic modern, and how to mix them without the result feeling like a furniture showroom.
  • Room-by-room guides: Layouts, color palettes, and styling ideas for every space in the house, including the awkward ones.
  • Kitchen decor and organization: Counter styling, open shelving, backsplashes, coffee bars, and pantries that look as good as they function.
  • Furniture makeovers and DIY: Step-by-step refinishing projects, paint techniques, and thrift flips, written by someone who has made every mistake at least once.
  • Budget-friendly ideas: Ways to get a high-end look without high-end spending.
  • Seasonal and holiday decor: Fresh ideas for fall mantels, spring tables, and everything in between.

How We Create Our Content

Girls On It uses AI tools to help with research and first drafts. That lets us cover more topics and keep guides up to date. But nothing gets published until I’ve reviewed it. I check every article for accuracy, rewrite whatever doesn’t sound right, and add the practical know-how that only comes from hands-on experience in real homes and a real workshop. If a technique wouldn’t hold up in my own projects, it doesn’t go on the site.

You can read the full details in our Editorial Policy and Methodology.

Ten Things to Know About Me

A countdown, because none of us have the attention span for anything longer.

10. I’m quite geeky. Pour me a glass of wine and I’ll tell you all about my deep and enduring love for Tolkien.

9. I have one tattoo (so far). It says “Antiques,” and I’m rather proud of it.

8. I really, really love history. Museums and antique shops are my happy places.

7. Mixing old and new is my favorite decorating rule. A vintage piece makes a modern room feel lived in.

6. I wear makeup always. Sawdust and lipstick are not mutually exclusive.

5. It’s Heir and Space, pronounced Air and Space. My name is Kate. We’ve covered this, but it bears repeating.

4. I love animals, except monkeys. Monkeys frighten me.

3. I’ve been refinishing furniture for well over a decade and I never get bored in my workshop.

2. My favorite color is chartreuse. This is important.

1. I love what I do. Getting to work on homes and write about them for a living still feels like a dream come true.
